Geographers on the Market: Dr. Tyler Sonnichsen

IMG_1894I’m a cultural geographer with interests in media, tourism, gender, and urbanism. Much of my work revolves around ways through which cities change over time, with special consideration for public transit infrastructure, healthcare, and arts funding. My doctoral research (PhD 2017, The University of Tennessee) focused on cultural circulation, punk landscapes, and the late 20th century. I obtained my MA in Geography from California State University, Long Beach in 2013, focusing on the emotional geographies of LA’s vinyl record industry. My research was published as a chapter in a volume on The Production and Consumption of Music in the Digital Age (Hracs, Seman and Virani, eds, 2016).

The foundation of my interest in the intersection of media studies and place began in undergrad, working on my B.S. in TV-Radio-Film from the Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University. While at Syracuse, I minored in Geography and Spanish, spending the Spring 2004 semester in Madrid. After I graduated from Syracuse, I moved to Washington, DC, where I worked in audio production, the dance/house music industry, and public relations over a course of six years before leaving to return to school.
