Sustainability has its roots in the study of sustainable development, which encompasses economic development, social development, and environmental protection – the three pillars of sustainability. Students who study sustainability will pursue an understanding of these three pillars.
Sustainability is an interdisciplinary field with many career opportunities drawing from the knowledge of biological and physical sciences, economics, geography, technology, engineering, social sciences, environmental resource management, and environmental policy.
Careers for sustainability graduates fall under many varying titles but tend to be careers related to the production of goods or services that benefit the environment or conserve natural resources and involve production processes, which improve social and environmental responsibility
