On May 22, 2013, Mrs. Elizabeth Hammond passed away, about 7 weeks after her 95th birthday. Elizabeth and her late husband, Ed Hammond, were important members of the UTK Geography family. Ed was a long-time faculty member and former department head in Geography. He retired in 1987.
The Department of Geography has a special endowment named in honor of Edwin and Elizabeth Hammond. Gifts to this fund, many of them coming directly from the Hammond family, have been used to bring a distinguished “Hammond Lecturer” to the department each year. This lecture series plays an important role in enhancing the intellectual life of our unit. In the spring of 2013, the department hosted a visit by Mrs. Hammond’s son, Richard.
In early or mid-June of 2013, there will be a memorial service for Mrs. Hammond at Episcopal Church of the Ascension in Knoxville, where Ed and Elizabeth were longtime members. Further information on the date and time of the memorial service will be provided soon.
