Bing Zhou

Assistant Professor | GIST

Bing Zhou is an assistant professor in the Department of Geography and Sustainability at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He obtained his bachelor’s degree from Wuhan University and his master’s degree from Tongji University. He earned his PhD from the Department of Geography, Texas A&M University, and specializes in geospatial data science, GeoAI, and Remote Sensing.

Bing Zhou leads the Geospatial Responsible AI for Nature-human Dynamics Laboratory (GRIND), the vision of which is to foster a resilient, equitable, and healthy society through responsible and geospatial thinking. Bing Zhou’s research focuses on developing responsible geospatial AI to understand and mitigate coupled nature–human risks. He designs advanced GeoAI models to detect, forecast, and explain disaster impacts across space and time. His work integrates various types of geospatial big data, such as remote sensing, streetview imagery, mobility and, environmental monitoring (e.g., heat, smoke, flooding), and population-scale digital traces to quantify exposure, vulnerability, and recovery. In addition, he examines the compounding effects of concurrent hazards and environmental burdens on dementia and mental health, uncovering mechanism that link place, exposure pathways, and psychosocial outcomes. Throughout, he embeds principles of Responsible GIScience—Security, Trustworthiness, Equity, Philanthropy—to deliver actionable evidence and decision tools for communities, agencies, and health systems.

The GRIND lab is actively seeking graduate students interested in the following topics. Please contact me if interested.

  • GIScience
  • Geospatial Big Data, GeoAI, Spatial Computing
  • Natural Disasters
  • Social Media Analytics
  • Environmental Health
