Devyn Kelly

Academic Advisor, Maryville College

My name is Devyn Kelly, and I received my bachelor’s and master’s degrees in geography from the University of Tennessee. During my master’s, I explored queer geographies. I studied how a drag family came together out of survival to make a home for themselves in a state (Tennessee). A state that is constantly trying to restrict their access to happy, healthy lives. I created a short documentary film highlighting the House of Commitment to accompany my written thesis. In the film, I dive into the struggles this family faces every day with the current legislature and how drag allows them to thrive in the face of oppression.

Here is a link to the film:

After graduating with my master’s in May of 2023, I began lecturing in the Geography Department at UTK, teaching Intro to GIS and World Geography. I love the connections I have made with the excellent students of UTK, and I am beyond proud to be a part of their journey at this incredible university.

When I am not working, I spend my time with my wonderful wife Courtney, and energetic puppy, Ollie. My favorite weekend activity is to relax and unwind with a good book and a large cup of coffee at South Press in South Knoxville.

To my students, colleagues, and other geography grads, know I am always rooting for you, and I am here if you need me. Go Vols!
