Anna Marshall

Assistant Professor | Physical Geography

Anna Marshall is a fluvial geomorphologist and incoming Assistant Professor in the Department of Geography & Sustainability. She broadly studies how rivers shape the landscape and how humans shape rivers. Anna is coming from Colorado State University where her research has explored biophysical processes shaping naturally dynamic river systems and how that physical complexity can foster resilience to disturbances such as floods, wildfire, and drought. She uses fieldwork paired with statistical modeling and remote sensing to answer questions across different spatial and temporal scales. Anna actively bridges research with practice through collaboration with communities and resource managers to link an understanding of natural function in river systems with river restoration applications. Her research flows across locations from steep headwater mountain rivers to large, low gradient alluvial rivers and she is eager to add Appalachian rivers and restoration sites in the Southeast to her ongoing research and teaching at UTK.
